SYLVESTER My dad and I met Sylvester in downtown Kitchener, just east of the City Hall. After getting into a comfortable sitting position, he said to us, [I came to Canada from Jamaica] early. [I was] fifteen, sixteen. I haven’t been back … I liked [coming here, though] … I like experiencing change….It was interesting experiencing the difference [between the two countries].” After a brief pause, my dad asked Sylvester, “You probably don’t like our winters though, eh?” Sylvester responded saying, “I actually do [like them]. I appreciate the four seasons....In Jamaica we have one, no, two: rainy and sunny.” Seeing the surprised look on our faces he said, “There actually is a rainy [season]. It rains a lot!” Near the beginning of the photo shoot my camera, mysteriously, stopped working, requiring me try to grab my other one. This resulted in a delay of between 5-10 minutes. When I told Sylvester that, if he wanted, he could go and do something else until I was ready, he said, “That’s okay. I’ve got nothing else to do.” When the photo shoot resumed, Sylvester took up where he had left off. “I like this place”, he told us. “I prefer it. I prefer where I am now to where I used to be. I actually used to live in Toronto … I had to go back [there] for the whole family. My dad died, [and] you know, that kinda stuff.” “So your dad died, but is your mom still alive?”, my dad asked Sylvester. He replied, “Yes, my mom is still alive. [She’s] eighty-nine I believe. She’s doing okay. Well, you know, at that age … I’d say [so]. She’s still thinking. Her mind will be the last thing to go I’m sure”, he said laughing. “But she complains about her body and stuff, yeah. She’s living with my younger brother’s family. It’s better that way. Separating yourself [from family] to the extent where your parents are in a nursing home, isn’t really [good].” “So what did you like to do growing up?” my dad asked Sylvester. He replied, “I was in the choir. That took up a lot of my time. The school was Anglican based, so we actually had a school choir, and I was fortunate enough to be able to sing in it. I can still sing,” he said with a chuckle.
